However, the time has finally come for the 2010 World Cup, an event that has been anxiously awaited for the past four years.
This year's host country, South Africa, was selected after a series of meetings with the FIFA's congress. Every four years, the host country is voted on and selected long before the tournament will actually take place, and the lengths, to which the organizers go to ensure that everything is not only prepared, but also perfected for each World Cup tournament, are truly exhaustive.

This is the first year the tournament has been hosted by an African nation. Five African nations placed bids to be the host of the 2010 World Cup; Egypt, Morocco, Libya, Tunisia and South Africa. Receiving the most votes, South Africa was selected to be the 2010 host. In preparation for the event, South Africa has renovated five stadiums for the games, as well as built five entirely new stadiums. They have also enhanced their public transit systems and major road networks have been improved.
The FIFA World Cup was founded in 1971, and takes place every four years for a one-month period of time. After each tournament, the name of the winning country and the year of their World Cup victory are engraved in the bottom side of the World Cup trophy. It is estimated that space on the base of the trophy will run out in 2038 or later.

This year, the tournament will be held June 11-July 11, 2010. Each year the tournament brings in teams from over thirty countries, and fans from far more. The selecting process for the participating teams began in August 2007, starting with 204 teams. The tournament started with 32 qualifying teams participating in the tournament.
