12 Best Movies about High School

From http://www.newsweek.com

Now that the schools are out, it's a perfect time to enjoy movies about high school. Here's the list from Newsweek for you to pick from.

Enjoy the movies! Enjoy the summer!

From Blackboard Jungle to High School Musical: a History of Movie High Schools

Unrequited crushes; star-crossed love; bad boys and good girls; drugs and rock and roll--for generations, these themes have dominated how teenagers are portrayed on film, to the point that they define the teenage years themselves. Some iconic films have been reviewed: how the sweet innocence of Bye Bye Birdie set the stage for today's High School Musical juggernaut; how Blackboard Jungle's tough kids turned into modern-day Mean Girls. The movies may have changed, but the themes are as stubborn as teenagers.

Blackboard Jungle

Before tough-love teachers started saving rebellious underprivileged teens in movies like Stand and Deliver and Freedom Writers, there was Blackboard Jungle, a tale about high-school toughs and a teacher that cared. Chock full of blaring rock-and-roll music and unruly and misguided boys attacking teachers, this high school set the stereotype for inner-city schools as violent and dangerous.

Bye Bye Birdie

Another story about a strong-willed teacher and a rebellious inner-city class, "To Sir With Love is a coming-of-age story about troubled kids growing up in a community that expects nothing of them. As they face poverty, absent parents, racial tensions, and their approaching adulthood, their teacher imparts life-changing lessons--and hope.

To Sir With Love

Lighthearted and satirical, it's a tale as old as time. A love-struck teen is slated to kiss her dream boy: a rock-and-roll star. The girls swoon and faint the minute he opens his mouth.

Grease

Grease pays tribute to what high-school life in the '50s might have been like if students had been prone to singing and dancing every five minutes. Like many a high-school film, Grease was about star-crossed lovers, teenage lust, and the challenges of fitting in.

American Graffiti

Though set in 1962, American Graffiti was a huge hit with its 1970s audience. On their last night of summer, teenagers say goodbye to their youth, celebrating one last night of freedom by racing cars, dancing to hedonistic rock and roll, disrespecting authority, and, of course, making out.

The Breakfast Club

Is there any movie more iconic? A vagabond crew--including the Jock, the Brain, the Criminal, the Princess, and the Kook--stuck in detention learn to look past stereotypes, free themselves from social pressure, and form an unlikely bond.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

A timeless--and much loved--story about cold parents, lifelong friendships, first loves, and striking a balance between childhood and adulthood in the face of the oh-so-ominous high-school graduation. Bueller? Bueller?

Heathers

What if one girl avenged the victims of the ultimate mean-girls clique at school? A dark comedy about the trials of being a high-school underdog tormented by a nasty A-list clique, the movie is a disturbing portrayal of one girl's gruesome solution to high-school bullies. Like most '80s high-school movies, this one is characterized by big hair and larger-than-life shoulder pads.

Clueless

A 1990s essential. Cher, the movie's protagonist, is a spoiled and determined rich girl with a lot to learn about everything outside of her tiny world of shopping and gossip. Clueless like totally portrays 1990s teenage consumerism and superficiality.

10 Things I Hate About You

The movie may have been based on Shakespeare (Taming of the Shrew), but it's still got classic prom scenes and romance on the football field. Plus: crop tops and unflattering denim.

Mean Girls

Hierarchy takes on a new level of cruelty. The Plastics, the high school's A-list clique, highlights a girl culture obsessed with perfection and celebrities and overwrought by backstabbing frenemies.

High School Musical

A craze that captured countless tweens. The film is replete with dance numbers and awkward teenagers singing and dancing about trying to fit in, first loves, and family pressures. It captures a new era of teenage busybodies and overachievers involved in all and any extracurricular activities but still consumed by high-school drama.
