A Peek into the Exclusive Whiskey Creek Golf Course
Located 35 miles outside of the District, Whiskey Creek Golf Course seems like an oasis stretching through the Maryland countryside. The hills are slope gradually and the fairway is fairly clear, offering panoramic views of Maryland’s untouched blue-green wetlands. The Catoctin Mountains rise in the distance, creating a calming experience. In this beautiful state, golfers are able to clear their minds and think of nothing but the challenging course in front of them.
Whiskey Creek’s history spans only a decade, when Ernie Els, yes the Ernie Els, the “Big Easy” first decided to self-design a course. Whiskey Creek was a bet of sorts, on his ability to apply his championship golfing skills to create an inimitable golfing experience for Washingtonian area golfers. Partnering with course architect J. Michael Poellet, the pair sought to incorporate the natural geological features of the Maryland-Pennsylvania landscape into a dynamic, varying course. The results were so pleasing Ernie went on to found his own course design business.
Whiskey Creek winds through the landscape of creeks, rivers, sand traps, rock croppings, stone walls, marsh pits, doglegs and rock pilings. There are several major elevation changes, allowing the spanning views. It’s a long course, surrounded by thick pine forest and prairie grass. Smart players will invest in a golf cart, take it easy, and keep their balls on the fairway. You won’t want to be fishing your ball out of the grasses or marsh again when you arrive at the eighteenth hole in this long course. Summer season is just ending at Whiskey Creek, and the 26th will begin their fall rates.
The preserved Maryland forests offer splendid array of gold, red, orange and yellow foliage as the course changes into autumn. Best are the quiet early mornings when the Beltway courses are occupied by a smattering of D.C. lawmakers and business executives. At $82-99 Whiskey Creek retains its exclusivity, but provides well for guests with practice balls, a cart and a Pro-Link GPS included in the fee. As you pull up to the secluded clubhose, you’ll realize not your average Sunday course, but a special experience for those who truly understand the “golfing retreat”.
